Riddim Review
There was once a time in Reggae/Dancehall Music when Selectors/DJs/Sounds & the general public alike would look forward to the latest Riddims that would be produced during the year, especially for the Summer & Christmas Season. Riddims from labels like Penthouse, Fat Eyes, Exterminator, Jammy’s, Pots of Gold & the infamous Madhouse & X-Large labels house some of Reggae/Dancehall’s timeless riddims to this day. Riddims were also released within a reasonable time of one another to give each one a chance at dominating in the dancehalls & were also put together with a theme or themes that made them cohesive for juggling. There was also a balance of riddim styles; You would get Dancehall, Vocal and Culture Riddims mixed with one a way singing chunes in each era to make the dances nice and round musically.
Unfortunately, with the advances in technology we’ve seen a decline in quality of riddim production, which seems to be the case across the board with music. We are now barraged with riddims that are either a re-lick of an old riddim or a bunch of old riddims pieced together or an original that seems to be thrown together and a bag a songs that have no real purpose. In the rare instance that we do get a nice original Riddim, the majority of chunes aren’t worth playing and so the Riddim is discarded for the most part. There are almost no more Riddims that are produced that will be Riddims that will play after their current hype ends.
With Riddim Review I will attempt to highlight some of the better quality riddims that are being produced as well as discuss some of the producers that are actually making quality music. This will not feature every riddim because a) with the amount of riddims being produced it would be almost impossible to do anything else & b) most of them nuh worth mentioning anyway.
Stay tuned for the next entry…
