Gappy Ranks-Artiste Profile

Gappy Ranks…

It’s no secret that although Reggae/Dancehall Music has conquered the world at large, whether it is acknowledged or not, artists coming out of Jamaica are the ones that get the most recognition and rightfully so. Jamaica is the birthplace of the world’s most influential music so the artists coming out of JamDown traditionally have the strongest influence over its music. But as we know, there are other places that produce stars as well and presently that place is the UK.

Gappy Ranks is undoubtedly one of the brightest new stars in Dancehall/Reggae of this time. I was first introduced to his music when I got the song “Heaven in her Eyes” in ‘09 and since then he has gotten my attention as well as many other DJs & Selectors worldwide. He has a versatile delivery that allows him to Deejay over dancehall riddims as well as sing over Studio 1, Rockers and One Drop riddims, which seem to be where he’s most comfortable. His album last year “Put the Stereo On” featured the artist over Classic Studio 1 and Rockers riddims & he dealt with them very well. His current Album Thanks & Praise features more of Gappy’s versatility but still highlights his skill over One Drops.

Ranks’ lyrics, as far as I have heard, remain positive and uplifting and in a time where slackness and violence is controlling Dancehall it is refreshing to hear a young artist making music in this direction. Although he is getting very little recognition in the Jamaican Dancehall scene as well as much of the American Dancehall scene, he is dominating Europe and has made his way to the Far East.

Gappy Ranks is definitely an Artist to look out for and gets the WYRAS stamp of approval.

Mi Gone!!!
