Let's Talk About Sex Vol 2: Dancehall's Double Standard

It was so ironic, because I wanted to discuss this, and I log onto Twitter last week and see my favorite tweeter (Mr. Vegas) talking di tings. He was talking about how when Ce’cile released “Give it to me” a few years ago, the people in Jamaica gave her such a fight.  He then went on to say that if someone released the song now, that it would probably get the biggest forward, because Jamaicans have lost their way.  However, I beg to differ.  I have noticed, that in Jamaica, as with many things, there is a double standard.  Yes times change, and although certain things remain “taboo” in the public eye, they are slowly becoming more acceptable.  But there are certain things that I believe Jamaicans have a long way to go on.  Dancehall music is male dominated, and although many Jamaican men may perform oral sex in private, it is highly unlikely that they will admit it, especially on wax.  Yet Baby Cham encouraged women to perform oral sex over 10 years ago saying ‘which gal a jump and a say she nah suck right ya now a dat run di cut’.  Everyone knows about Kartel’s love for oral sex, he never misses the opportunity to remind us. When Lisa Hype’s infamous picture came out the internet was ablaze.  However, when the initial shock died down she was able to parlay it into a greater career opportunity.  When the picture of the person believed to be Mavado came out, it was certain that his career would crash and burn if it was determined to be him.
One another note, I have also noticed Jamaican men touching the topics of threesomes, and bisexual females.  This is hilarious to me because when did such an openly homophobic culture start to embrace such things (insert sarcasm here lol).  TOK’s song, “Ménage a Trois” on the Retweet riddim (which I love btw) openly talks about inviting another girl into a couple’s bedroom.  Then Busy Signal released “I Love Girls That Love Girls”.  The title is self-explanatory lol.  Now we all know that most men have this fantasy, but I just find it ironic that these things are being discussed so openly in music when Jamaicans never miss an opportunity to bun out “pu**y sucking “ and “ba**y f**king”.  But it’s ok as long as it’s girls doing the sucking and not man on man action.  I am not condoning one or the other but just merely stating how contradictory and hypocritical this looks.  I personally believe that there is way too much going on in Jamaica that people can focus on correcting than to worry about what another person is doing in their bedroom.  People need to concentrate on satisfying their mate, and not allow outsiders to dictate the confines of your relationship.  I totally understand that it is a cultural belief and that is how most of us were raised, but at least be fair.  If you are going to bun out one, then bun out all.  And on that note, Smooches till next time!

Ok...

Hotlipps has been wanting to discuss this for a while now so let's talk di tings. First of all... I agree with Mr Vegas in his sentiment that Jamaica has lost its way! At one point Jamaicans could always hold up their heads high & uphold the standard that separate us from everyone else. From the Shabba days "Bowing" has been fought against by Dancehall artists... And Bowing included Oral Sex by Both Male & Female and Anal Sex whether Male or Female. Now we fast foward to '98 and here comes Baby Cham on the Bruckout saying gyal fi give headaz. Now what Hotlipps failed to mention is the Backlash that came after. Artists came out & bun Cham for that and we didn't hear about that again for a long time. Women would brag about how good their Sexual Skills were and the fact that they DON'T need to Suck to Keep their men. The Suckaz were looked down upon by everyone. Fast Forward to '03 and here comes Ce'cile, another Uptown Artist... (Look like Uptown a gwaan wit some "tings" fr long time") with Do It To Me Baby on the ThundaClap Riddim. But she wasn't the first to talk about it. The ever controversial Tanya Stephens said a no she tell di man fi tun freak... On the original Baddis Riddim in '98. So even back then the subjects were present, but there wasn't a blatant supporting & pushing of these things. Fast forward to the present, 7yrs after Ce'cile chune & all hell breaks loose. Artist all a tek picture with gyal a give him headaz and send it all over the internet. The ting gone way outta left field.

To me this not a question of Double Standard... Its a question about Standards period. The one thing that separated Dancehall Music & Reggae Music and its true fans is that they knew it didn't include all the things that the other genres did. At one point you couldn't even call people certain names that were common in Hip Hop Culture. (Does anyone remember when the late Biggie Smalls got Bottled in Ja after saying what up all my niggas & bitches?) There was a certain pride that was present in Dancehall & Reggae Music that is clearly disappearing. From the time Dancehall has started following its own Child Hip Hop (Yes Hip Hop comes from Dancehall... If u nuh know do you homework), its lost its way and we're seeing the results.

My thing is this... We all know that as long as there is sex there will be Oral Sex... And even Homosexuality (even though I don't know why). People a go do wat dem waah do. However, everything should NOT be endorsed. The problem with endorsing one thing is that you have to endorse everything. 10 years ago you couldn't tell anybody that the Biggest artist in Dancehall would be a proud Bleacher. 10 years ago you couldn't tell anybody that Oral Sex would be the biggest thing and that Yaad woman would be boasting about doing it. When you think of that then we have to ask how far is the Anal Sex endorsement? If the standards don't come back to the Music its never going to hold the same respect it once did again.

Oh & Hotlipps... Which career move Lisa Hype mek? Unless she's giving Lisa Hype specialty classes mi nuh see har a do nutin... Lol...

With all that said; Ladies... If you wanna please your man... Do it to the Best of your ability... But watch di camera ting...

Fellas... If you're a glutton... Do your ting if you want... Just remember... You are what you eat!!!

Mi Gone.

RRRRRRRRRRR

Just to answer Mish, I didn't say Lisa Hype buss, but a lot of people thought her career was DONE after being banished from the Gaza.  But she has maintained her own.  She has toured overseas, in the UK, Bahamas, and other islands, done a collaboration with Beenie Man, performed on Sting etc.  She hasn't disappeared the way many thought she would. She used this to her advantage.  I say why not.  Money haffi mek lol.

  3. I agree with Hotlipps. Lisa Hype owned up to the foto & said she's out & bad doing what others would never admit to. Now they did boo her at 2009 Sting, and every female DJ took that oppportunity to do a dis track, but she did not disappear! And actually, by the end of her performance at that Sting, there were quite a few cheers. (side note, I still think she's talentless & there are way better female DJs out there (shout out to Spice)) Either way, JA has gone to the dogs. At least that was 1 thing we had over the other Caribs, our claim to fame. Now if you tell a yankee you JA ppl don't bow you're gonna get laughed at. But on the other hand the close mindedness and ignorance has only hurt the island. HIV rates are as high as Africa there, but no one will ever admit it because supposedly no real batty men are there, & no one will ever admit to being HIV+, much less getting care & slowing the spread of the virus. "nuff gyal" is still the mantra many men live by, especially if they're on the down low, and the country doesn't even have illegitimacy laws. Do away with the double standards (yes Mishigan, there is definite sexism in JA...It's a patriarchial society),make it safe for people to be open about sex and sexuality, & EDUCATE!!!!

  4. I loved the way my jamaican people articulated their points on this topic. I will not however follow their lead. All mi can seh is bun the batty fucking. Mi no mine headz if a that she like do but I man nah bow. To each their own but there is definately is a double standard in dancehall as there is in society as a whole. That's why a guy is the man for his sexual prowess and how much women he has taking down, while a woman can't follow his lead or she will be labeled. So if a guy gives a partner count divide it by 3 and if a lady gives a count multiply by 3.
