World AIDS Day 2010

Today is World AIDS Day.  A day to reflect on the impact of the disease, as well as our own health and the health of our loved ones.  Everyone is emphasizing the importance of knowing your status.  Make sure you get tested, if you don't know and encourage your sexual partner(s) to do so as well.  Especially our Black women who have the highest rate of infection.  Trust only yourself, and don't swear for anyone.  AIDS has no look, and does not discriminate.  The sexiest girl, or the best dressed man could be infected. Nearly 40% of Blacks have reported never being tested and almost 200,000 Americans are infected and don't even know about it (CDC).  Don't take anything for granted.

Alicia Keys as part of her Keep a Child Alive Charity, has spearheaded the 'Digital Death' campaign. Her and other celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams and others have vowed to refrain from using Social Networking sites today.  People can contribute to "bring them back to life" at either http://buylife.org/  or via text by texting BUYLIFE to 90999.  Proceeds will be used to provide AIDS medication, as well as nutrition, shelter, support and education for infected children in Africa and India.
