Sting 2010: Clips of Some Performances

STING 2010 Review: From My Perspective

From early, people seemed not to be excited about the show, with Mavado, and Kartel not scheduled to perform. The usual war vibes weren't there.  Earlier in the night, Etana said something very profound on twitter, and it spoke volumes.  She said  "One conclusion a show that was based on war and clash will never work on a peace vibe. These people who go to sting go for clash and war." That is so true!

So I woke up just in time to catch some of the headliners and obviously miss some smh.  I had a chance to hear I-Octane perform who was one of the most anticipated artistes of the night.  He didn't disappoint. He performed hits like "Mine Who Dem a Diss" "Puff it", "Lose a Friend', and "Mama You Alone". I had just missed Sizzla who from what I was hearing really did his thing, and I-Octane maintained the hype. I then had the opportunity to hear Lady Saw's performance.  Always entertaining with her sexually charged lyrics, Saw did a sexified version of "Jingle Bells" and remixed Billionaire, stating that she wanted to sex a billionaire so freaking bad lol.  It was hilarious.  She did her usual hits like "Man a Di Least", "If Di Man Lef", and "Backshot".  She even did an impromptu song taking jabs at dancehall's leading men, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, and Aidonia.  It was all in fun.  The only part I can't really endorse was her song about allowing her man to cheat as long as he didn't bring any diseases home.  I know many woman hold that mentality, but I can't endorse that! JMO

The next part of the show which  we later found out would be the last part of the show featured Kiprich.  Kippo tried hyping up the crowd, by taking small jabs at Kartel, about his absence from STING, especially since Portmore is his place.  He then brought out Blak Ryno, who gave Kartel credit for bussing his career and then proceeded to launch the missile even taking aim at Popcaan by saying "Anybwoy come from a place where dawg nyam dawg, that mean dem a nyam gyal hard" OKKKKKKKK. Kiprich of course performed his current hit "Cyaan Get Brown" and then Assassin and Beenie Man came out during this set with very rushed performances.

Supposedly there was a buzz of some issues backstage, and Bounty Killer did NOT perform.  Neither did Baby Cham or Aidonia.  All in all, there is an air of disappointment about this year's STING.  If you weren't there, you didn't miss a thing.  And on that note, Smooches from Hotlipps!

CNN Confirms Teena Marie Dead at age 54

Twitter rumors have been flying for about an hour or so, but CNN has confirmed that songbird Teena Marie has died at age 54.  Reports have been confirmed by her manager Mike Gardner.  The reason has not been disclosed. Teena Marie was truly an icon in the business. She was well known for her stand out voice.  As a white female with a strong soulful voice, she was known for hits like Square Biz, Lovergirl, and her famous duet with Rick James Fire & Desire.  This hurts my heart. RIP Teena Marie! Condolences go out to her family, friends, and fans worldwide from WYRAS.

Future Fambo: This Life

I am really feeling this song. Big up Future Fambo fi real!

I-Octane: Best Up & Coming Artiste 2010

The fans have spoken! With 45% of the votes in the WYRAS poll, I-Octane has been voted the Best Up & Coming artiste for the year.  If you are not familiar with this artiste, you are really late.  I-Octane has been out for a few years, but really bust onto the scene this year with popular hits like "Puff It", "Mine Who Dem a Diss", "Nuh Love Inna Dem", "My Life" and others.  I-Octane provides a nice blend of cultura vibes and has a melodic voice. In my opinion, I haven't seen this much buzz surrounding a culture artiste since the emergence of Jah Cure. In a recent Entertainment Report episode the hype surrounding I-Octane's performance at Sting was amazing.  And the feedback from his live performances have been nothing but good.  WYRAS wishes I-Octane continued success in his budding career!

Kartel says: No Time For Idlers

In a recent interview with the Jamaica Star, Vybz Kartel said that he would not be responding to Beenie Man's song "Father God Help Them" on the Dancehall Efx Riddim .  After Beenie Man's appearance on the Ragashanti show last week, fans were waiting for Kartel's response.  There were even rumors of a song being performed by Kartel and Popcaan at last week's Street Vybz Thursday in The Building.  However Kartel stated, that he has no time for war, lyrical or otherwise.  Kartel is working on his new album which is set to come out in 2011, and will be performing around Jamaica and the Caribbean in upcoming weeks.  Beenie Man also reiterated, that despite the recent rift with Kartel, he will continue to say Gaza, because he rates talent.  That I rate to the max!

Charly Blacks-Nuh Live Nuh Weh

I have to say this new Charly Blacks shotttttttttttttttt.....in light of some recent events, I must say this is so true. Priorities my people. Big up all my ladies who sort out in EVERY aspect!  Listen to the words. I love it. Lol

Talent Spotlight: Baby Chris, What Did I Do

Whenever we hear & see quality tings... WYRAS will always feature it. With that being said, I'd like to re-introduce the world to Baby Chris. I say Re-Introduce because he already shocked the world with his smash hit Ring Ding Ding (Crazy Frog) on Jah Sno Cone's Applause Riddim. We all remember how that song used to mash up dance in the Passa Passa Era & still does during any Jiggy Segment. Baby Chris has since left LOC and ventured on his own. Since then he as had hits like Dagga Train and his hit earlier this year Best Woman, a tribute to single mothers. That song had Jamaica weak over this past Mother's Day. His Latest song on Seanizzle's Split Personality Riddim Showcases his versatility as he sings to the ladies. This song will definitely have the ladies going crazy and has a lot of crossover potential. This chune gets a full WYRAS endorsment.

Anonymous says: This is a Correction Not a Counteraction- Another Kartel Diss

And we're off.....Dancehall Hero really mash nuff corn lol

Talent Spotlight: Mystic Davis

Entertainers come and go at the speed of light, but MYSTIC is determined to make it to the top and shine brighter than the stars. The young dancer who recently added artiste to her portfolio is currently one of the hottest dancers on the entertainment scene in Jamaica, and her flame only seems to be getting hotter every week.

Born in Port Antonio in Portland, Jamaica and christened as Mystic Davis; she developed the love for dancing at a very early age. As early as age seven the dark skinned beauty was dancing ballet for Titchfield High School Ballet Troupe. At age thirteen while attending Wolmer's Girls School, she started to dance to dancehall music and has never looked back since. Now in her early twenties, MYSTIC is a choreographer, dancer, former model & now dancehall artiste. While modelling, MYSTIC reached the acclaim of doing a poster campaign for the Cooyah Clothing Company and VP's Riddim Driven. She has done choreography for Jamaican girl group Make Boyz Cry (MBC), Harbour View's Cheerleading Club and Miss UWI Mona Pageant along with many others. Always seen smiling with a cute gap between her front teeth, the slim dancer has been in Digicel, Lerner's Shop, NCB Be The Change Campaigns Red Label Wine and the Observer's CHAT! Commercials.

MYSTIC has showcased her talents in both local & international music videos, most notably Sean Kingston & Nicki Minaj "Letting Go (Dutty Love)"; Gnarl Barkley's "Goin On", Beenie Man's 'Whine Gyal', Tifa's 'Bottom of the barrel', Shaggy, Elephant Man, Wayne Marshall and Bounty Killer to name just a few. She also stars in a video directed by Ras Kassa Jay Will (GAMEOVER) Ruption Diboss as well as Sean Pauls "Gimme The Light" director, Little X.

Her musical talent comes from her mother Joy White is most notable for the single "First Cut is the Deepest" along with many others. So fast forward to June 2010, where Mafia McKoy of LOUD Disturbance Records invited MYSTIC to record her debut single "Wine Up", along with her collaboration with Macka Diamond & top female dancers entitled "Too Much Bull" debuted at number 1 on the Bubblers Chart in Toronto, Canada. Her remix of Leftside's "Phat Punani/Want Yuh Body" became an instant hit on the day of its release.
Other than dancing up a storm wherever she goes, she has influenced many in her life. 100m and 200m world record holder Usain Bolt led her to be his dance mentor. He will never forget that the 'Mystical Sensation' taught him how to dance and at every event he never fails to tell the crowd. It is through this friendship that MYSTIC is no stranger to performing with international artistes such as Ludacris on Usain Bolt's charity concert in 2009 which has over 71,000 views on Youtube. It was the first time hearing the song, as it was the official debut of the single by Ludacris. This then lead to performances in the Caribbean to countries such as Trinidad & Tobago.
MYSTIC is expected to continue to grow from strength to strength as a performer. Now as an artiste with a very bright future ahead with expected new hit singles, collaborations and eventual album, the world awaits to hear & see this 'Mystical Sensation' become a Legend

*Thanks to Mystic for working with me and providing a great bio. She is dedicated to her craft and determined to succeed. Her work can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/dancergurlmystic.  Mystic can also be reached on Myspace, and Facebook or you can follow her on Twitter.

Bob Marley's Death A Murder??

Bob Marley died almost 30 years ago from cancer.  That has always been the widely accepted reason.  However his grandaughter Donisha Prendergast, suggests otherwise.  While promoting her documentary Rasta:  A Soul's Journey, which chronicles the history of Rastafarianism, and its evolution in Jamaica and worldwide, Prendergast spoke openly about her beliefs.  In an interview with the The Voice, Prendergast alludes to the powerful position her grandfather held prior to his death.  She believes that Bob Marley was poisoned by "political interests who feared his outspokenness to educate the masses about the Babylon system."  She claims that this is typically what happens to our leaders.  Bob Marley was clearly the most iconic musical figure from Jamaica and no one has yet to reach the acclaim he has had thus far.  To date, Marley has had almost $300 Million in album sales.  Prendergast continues to promote her documentary which she hopes will open the eyes of outsiders to Rastafari and its influences.

Dont Call It a Comeback: Wayne Wonder Released from VP and Back on the Scene

Wayne Wonder who has experienced success in the Dancehall arena for many years and also mainstream success with his Grammy nominated album, No Letting Go, is making a return.  In recent years he had been battling with VP Records to be released, which has finally happened.  Wonder is now eager to get back to work.  He is currently touring in Japan, and will be appearing alongside Buju Banton at his Before the Dawn Concert in Miami in January.  Wonder is also in the studio, and has recently released two songs. "If I Ever" his self-produced track debuted at #4 on the Itunes Reggae Charts. He is also featured on "Girl Dem Follow" with TOK, on the popular Winnings Riddim which was produced by Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor.  We anticipate his follow-up album and wish him continued success on his new endeavors.

Entertainment Report: Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, and more!

On the heels of Kartel's announcement that he is going to be launching his own line of 'cake soap' Bounty responded with his own views about Kartel's bleaching. He disputes that 'cake soap' is the culprit, and alludes to a pill or injection that he says is responsible for Kartel's newly acquired complexion. He calls Kartel a zombie, and answers Kartel's claim that Bounty and Beenie don't have what it takes entertain the Sting-goers.

Also fans chime in on whether they think Sting will flop. Seems like a lot of people are anticipating I-Octane's performance.

Finally, clips of I-Octane, Tarrus Riley, Baby Cham, Lady Saw and Vybz Kartel at the recent Red Stripe Bold Concert in New Kingston.

Buju Banton & Friends Before the Dawn Concert Lineup Announced

The lineup has been announced for the eagerly anticipated concert taking place on January 16, 2011 in Miami.  Performers will include:  Stephen Marley, Freddy McGregor, Sly & Robbie, Gramps Morgan, Wayne Wonder & Shaggy. I am sure there will be many more surprise guest appearances.  In light of Banton's legal troubles, many fear that this may be his last performance for awhile, especially on U.S. soil.  Advance tickets purchased before 12/31 are $42 with $100 VIP tickets available as well.

Shaggy-The Return of Mr Boombastic

Shaggy who has been recording since the early 1990s made a name for himself, by going Diamond in 2001 with his album Hot Shots which featured the smash hit "It Wasn't Me".  He has released a few albums since then but has remained relatively quiet over the past few years, focusing on his various charity efforts   In preparation for his new album, tentatively called The Return of Mr Boombastic, Shaggy has been releasing a flurry of new songs.  Above are 3 of them "Girls Dem Luv We" featuring Mavado, "For Your Eyes Only" featuring Alaine, which is currently #1 on the New York Reggae Chart, and "Sexy Weekend" featuring Mina on the Sexy Bak Riddim.  The release date of Shaggy's new album has yet to be announced

Lady Saw Opens Her Own Studio

Marion Hall better known as Lady Saw is a pioneer in her own right. Her longevity in the male dominated Reggae/Music business is admirable. As an artiste she has paved the way for the likes of Ce'cile, Tifa, Spice and many others. Now she has a new venture, opening her own studio. Lady Saw who has tried her hand at producing in the past and has her own label, Diva Records, will open her studio next week. Hats off to Lady Saw for always taking it to the next level!

Don't Call It a Comeback: Dave Kelly

Dave Kelly has been one of the Premier dancehall producers since the 1990s on his label Madhouse Records. He is responsible for popular riddims like Showtime, Joyride, Bug, and Bruk Out among others. He has also produced mainstream hits like "Action" by Nadine Sutherland & Terror Fabulous, Dude' by Beenie Man, and more recently Baby Cham's "Ghetto Story". Kelly's influence has been missed amidst a barrage of sound-alike, and forgettable riddims. Well Kelly is back with a vengeance. First with "Stronger" featuring the reunion of Bounty Killer and Baby Cham alongside Mykal Rose. Now with the recently released Turn it Up riddim, which features songs by Bounty Killer, Baby Cham, Bling Dawg, Timberlee, and veteran artiste Pinchers. I for one am glad to see him back on the scene!

Kymani Marley: Dear Dad

Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE Kymani Marley. Kymani Marley is known for his music as well as his breakout roles in the movies 'One Love' and 'Shottas'.  Kymani who was just 5 years old when his father the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley died has written a biography entitled 'Dear Dad' which is also the name of a song he sang a few years ago. The book was not without controversy, as there were some issues with the original subtitle.  Kymani and the publishers have since been able to come to an agreement, and newer versions will have the modified subtitle.    Kymani wants to emphasize that the story is "from his heart & soul".  In ' Dear Dad'  he tells about being banished from his father's estate after Marley's death in 1981. Him and his mother then left Jamaica where Kymani was raised in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Miami.  Kymani's life was clearly not the bed of roses one would imagine.  But Kymani attributes his drive and ultimately his success to the trials and tribulations that he has faced in his life.  Kymani started his international book tour in October.

Beenie Man EXCLUSIVE- Dancehall Hero Counteraction

Everyone is taking shots at Kartel lately. Now the Dancehall King steps up to the plate with his song "Father God Help Him" on the Dancehall EFX Riddim.

Then & Now-Benz Punany

Ok for the past 2 days i've been hearing a LOT of buzz surrounding Vybz Kartel 's remake (yes REMAKE for the youngsters lol) of Benz Punany.  So I said let me take a listen, and I was like ok....thats it *bbm confused face* lol.  First of all everyone knows I am a diehard Kartel fan, and rate him to the max. But there is nothing special about the song. What amazed me even more, is how difficult it was just to find the Grindsman song on Youtube.  Have we really forgotten our foundation Dancehall artistes??? To me, the original by Grindsman is 100 times better, I love the beat. The first version is the original by Grindsman and the second is the newer version by Vybz Kartel.  You be the judge!

Sting 2010 Update: No Gaza, No Gully

Well here we have it. We heard yesterday, that Mavado wasn't going to be at Sting 2010. Now Vybz Kartel has announced that he will be absent as well. Kartel went on to say "The Gaza and the Gully control dancehall music, and in our absence I can guarantee this Sting will be the floppiest Sting ever," in an interview with The Jamaica Star yesterday. I am inclined to agree. Sting definitely has some great performers lined up. However Sting has typically been known to draw a certain type of crowd, that are looking for a certain type of vibe. Laing looks like he is trying to change the face of Sting. I don't know how successful that will prove to be.

Crime & Music

Samantha aka Hotlipps said:

Seems like 2010 was an unlucky year for many artistes.  Every time you turned around, people were saying “Free so &so” because another musician was behind bars.  The most notable was probably Buju Banton who spent most of this year behind bars.  Banton who is now out on bail, shocked Jamaicans and reggae fans worldwide when he was arrested last December on charges of possession with the intention to distribute more than 5 kilos of coke.  It was then that the conspiracy theories began to fly.  Banton has been at the center of countless battles with Anti-Gay groups across the world, because of what they consider homophobic lyrics. Their claims are that his music promotes violence against gays, stemming from his 1992 release of Boom Bye Bye.  Many believe some of these groups set Buju up or were behind his arrest in some way. Whether you believe Buju is innocent or guilty is merely a matter of opinion.  I have learned not to swear for anyone.  I think what amazes me is that time and time again, celebrities find themselves in these “compromising” positions.  Are they victims? Does their spot in the limelight make them targets for setups, schemes etc? Or are they just arrogant and in some cases stupid enough to believe that they are above the law? This takes me to another artiste who spent some time behind bars this year, Bounty Killer.  This was a situation that had me in awe.  I rate Killer as an artiste and a foundation artiste at that.  But I can never condone a man putting his hands on a woman, let alone a hammer.  It amazed me that so many people especially women spoke out in support of Bounty while he was in jail.  Are people unable to separate the love of an artiste’s music from the simple morality of right or wrong? Or do many of us think that these women who enter into “relationships” with Bounty are deserving of the abuse since his reputation is public knowledge. This phenomenon has not only affected Jamaican artistes, but American ones as well.  Lil Wayne and T.I. both recently spent approximately a year in jail apiece.  T.I. must have missed it there because he took no time going back.  I just wish these people who have access to so much, would make better choices about what they do, with whom they associate, and what’s important especially because all of these men have children, and as celebrities have other children looking up to them.  Of course no one is perfect, and no one asks to be a role model.  It sort of just happens. If a celebrity as someone who has money engages in illegal activities, what motivation will a poor child in the ghetto who idolizes them have to not do the same?  Unfortunately in most cases I think it’s just a matter of art imitating life.  If an artiste talks about something in his songs, and he doesn’t actually do it, he is ridiculed for lacking street credibility. On a whole I think we as a people have lost direction.  We idolize criminal behavior as adults, what do we expect our children to grow up idolizing? Of course there are many who are wrongfully jailed but there are many who are not.   If we scream “Free so &so” whenever someone lands behind bars, aren’t we showing our children that it is ok to engage in criminal activity? Or there should be no consequences for our actions? Just food for thought.  Smooches from Hotlipps

Mishigan from RBZ SAID:

Hmmmm...

Strangely enough, I find myself to be in almost total agreement with my Partner Hotlipps on this topic. But I still have to say a few things to clear the air on many misconceptions.

Music, especially in our culture is a product the downtrodden and the poor. The majority of the artists that "Buss" come out of the Ghetto which is why the masses tend to relate to many of the things they talk about in their songs. We can look at all our artists across time, from Bob Marley to present and we'll see a common thread, Poor people singing to and for Poor people. In many cases music has become the alternative for these artists to break away from a life of crime, or to avoid it altogether. But the nature of where it comes from makes it difficult to separate it from criminals & criminal activity altogether.

In all genres of music, the criminal element is present, even classical music. However as we all know, as West Indians, we are under greater scrutiny than any other culture so it seems to show up more in ours. Many times artists and musicians find themselves working & performing for promoters who receive their money by less than honorable means. Even as a Selector, many times we are booked to play by people that mainstream society would refer to as "Questionable" people. Why? Mainly because they have the money to produce these events and/or to open the clubs that every type of person attends, not just the criminal element. Another reason is because they are more likely to support a person coming from a community similar to theirs in what they are doing, and also like to provide things for their communities, which is what explains many people's allegiances to Dons and certain other major criminal figures. So although Crime & Music are not one and the same, it is hard for Music to condemn crime and certain types of "criminal elements" when many times it is those elements that allow for the artists to work through their events.

Now please overstand that this is not a defense for crime or criminal activity. I'm merely stating facts on the issue. When the artists themselves commit crimes we then have a problem. The Artists are in the forefront and have the attention of the people and especially the youth. Whether they choose to admit it or accept it, once they have placed themselves in the limelight, they MUST be more responsible for their actions. As much as we can say it, we all know it to be true that the youth in mass don't look up to their teachers or their parents. They look up to who they think is "Cool" and most of the time this image comes from artists in music and sports figures. Artists need to be held more accountable for their actions.

Inspired by the most recent controversy with one of music's greatest artists ever Buju Banton's arrest, it is interesting to hear the debate on both sides of the issue. Should we feel compelled to support him or any other artist in the same predicament just because of their celebrity? You tell me...

Bad Suh Riddim

From time to time I hear a riddim and it really grabs my attention. Last riddim to do that for me was "Rail Up Riddim" this past summer. Well now we have the appropriately entitled "Bad Suh Riddim". The riddim produced by Washroom Entertainment features songs from the likes of Busy Signal, Tami Chynn, Tifa, Mr Lexx, Voicemail, among others. The one that caught my ear initially was Tami Chynn "Neva Know (Wicked Inna Bed)" This song was definitely an unexpected surprise from Tami as it shows her sexier side. Mr Lexx as always is repping for the hot girls with 'Gyal Yuh Hot'. Busy Signal never disappoints and his song "Wine Up (Nah Pop Dung)" is no exception. This riddim is definitely a waistline mover. This is the type of riddim I wish I could hear more of in dances in NY. But is like soundman fraid fi play new tune...but thats another topic. Anyway check it out, you won't be disappointed. Sting 2010 Update: No Mavado????

It has finally been confirmed what many had speculated.  After the Sting Poster Launch on Friday which was void of Mavado, it was confirmed that Mavado will not be performing at Sting this year.  Isaiah Laing the promoter for the show said he reached out to Mavado's management, and didn't receive a response, and so the show must go on.  Laing went on to say that there will be many other performers of interest, and that without a clash, he didn't think Mavado (or Kartel for that matter) by themselves would prove to be a big draw.  I think that is a low blow.  Mavado has had numerous hits this year, not to mention a strong fan base in Jamaica. Gully and Alliance fans will surely be disappointed. More and more Sting is sounding like a zzzzzzzz.  However Laing says the emphasis will be on performance with strong entertainers like Lady Saw, Beenie Man, I-Octane, Sizzla and more.  As an incentive a cash prize will be given to the artiste with the best performance.  So stay tuned!

Aidonia- Nuh Tek Chat (Dancehall EFX Riddim)

Aidonia voiced "Nuh Tek Chat" on the Dancehall EFX Riddim which has been making waves since it has been released a few days ago. After listening to the song, it was quite apparent why. Without calling names, the artiste has made it quite clear that he is taking jabs at Vybz Kartel, who released his song on the riddim Dancehall Hero about 6 weeks ago. In his usually clever style of DJing Aidonia references, bleaching, and Clarks which make it clear who he is referring to. To add fuel to the fire the song has been dubbed the 'Kartel Diss'. It will be interesting to see if Kartel will "tek up di corn" Aidonia has so blatantly thrown at him lol. Kartel and Aidonia are two of the most lyrically gifted artistes on the scene so a little battle between them would surely be entertaining as long as it stays on wax.

Jamaican Scientist Finds Potential Cure for Prostate Cancer

Last night Dr Henry Lowe, a Jamaican scientist announced the release of his Alpha Prostate Formula.  The formula will initially be launched as a "nutraceutical" due to the long R&D process it takes to have a drug approved and marketed.  However, this is a major breakthrough in the treatment, and elimination of Prostate cancer especially in Jamaica which has one of the highest rates of Prostate Cancer worldwide.  The number of undiagnosed cases can only be imagined.  The main ingredient of the formula is 'Jamaican ball moss' which has shown anti-cancer properties.  This brings great pride to Jamaica and to Jamaican nationals worldwide.  Kudos to Dr Lowe!

2011 Grammy Nominees-Reggae Album

Grammy Nominees were announced last night and as usual it has caused quite a stir. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 13, 2011 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The eligibility period for the 2011 Grammys are between September 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010. Nominees for Reggae album are "Before the Dawn," Buju Banton "Isaacs Meets Isaac," Gregory Isaacs & King Isaac "Revelation," Lee "Scratch" Perry "Made In Jamaica," Bob Sinclair And Sly & Robbie "One Pop Reggae +," Sly & Robbie and the Family Taxi "Legacy An Acoustic Tribute to Peter Tosh," Andrew Tosh.

As noticed Gyptian who was presumably the crowd favorite was not nominated.  This is surprising but not so much, since "Dancehall" music rarely gets noticed at these awards. Despite his recent legal troubles, and the protests of gay activists worldwide, Buju Banton's undeniable talent prevails. He manages to get a nomination.  It may be between him and the late Gregory Isaacs, who could posthumously take the award.  We'll see!

Let's Talk About Sex Vol 1: Bedroom Bully

Hotlipps said:

Whether you think it’s a myth or you think it’s true, Jamaican men have developed quite a bedroom reputation.  When thinking about Jamaican men songs like “Bedroom Bully” and “Stamina Daddy” come to mind.  Jamaican men have always boasted about their aggressive nature in the bedroom.  If you are a Jamaican woman, or one who has dealt predominantly with Jamaican men, you are probably used to the coercive and rough manner with which they approach sex.  My friends and I have even been known to joke about their techniques even labeling it as the “Hold dung and tek”, akin to rape.  Although rape is definitely no laughing matter, one can’t deny the similarities in their mannerisms.  To those of us who love the Jamaican man, this is something that we have become accustomed to.  It is almost as if it is a game or sport to them.  Their mission is to maintain an endurance and stamina second to none.   Women, who have experience with other nationalities, often can’t understand the allure of a Jamaican man, as some find sex with them barbaric, routine and in some cases downright unpleasurable.
The Jamaican man’s sexual persona has become such an important part of our culture, that songs over the years have repeatedly been made addressing it.  Buju Banton’s song “Gal Fi Beg” is one that stands out in my mind.  Banton brazenly talks about using any position necessary to make a woman bawl out in pain.  More recently artistes like Aidonia have adapted this style in songs like “In Her Belly” and “Grab Har Nuh” to name a few.  One of my favorite Aidonia lines this year talks about knocking the cologne bottles off the dresser during sex.  Oh my, the imagery lol.  The sexually aggressive nature has even given birth to a popular dancing style known as Daggering which mimic rough sex.
In an effort to maintain their “Bedroom Bully” image, there have been many products that have been used over the years, as well as new products that have hit the market boasting about giving a man more stamina.  So many concoctions have been used.  Again whether you believe they work is a different story.  Men have been drinking Irish Moss, Guinness stout, baba roots, Stone Ginger Wine and the infamous “Peanut Punch” Fabby Dolly sang about back in 1995. More recently we’ve seen the advent of Magnum, Jagra, Front End Lifter etc. In addition to beverages and concoctions, some men rely on topical agents like ‘Chiney Brush’ and ‘Stone’ which Powerman threatened,  “if a gal waan dead tell her fi come inna mi bed” lol.  All in all the Jamaican man’s sexual prowess is arguably one of the most notorious in the Caribbean, if not the world.  Some have been blessed with the natural ability, and others use enhancements and supplements.  The competition is stiff, pardon the pun, but in my opinion Jamaican men continue to lead by a mile.  ‘Til next time Smooches!

Alrite... This is an Interesting Topic. Firstly... I have to differ to my partner hotlipps on what she's saying as she would be the resident expert on this subject. I can only speak as a representative of the Man dem. It is true that Jamaican Men have always sought to be dominant in the bedroom... But I'm hoping its not only us... All men should think the same way. Ladies... Be truthful. Unnu don't want a man that's soft in bed!!! Of course there are exceptions to every rule but most ladies, ESPECIALLY West Indian ladies, don't really respect di softee softee petting pampering ting all the while. Now let's be clear... There is a time to be nice gentle with your woman and give it to her easy... But women don't want that the majority of the time. Women love the excitement and the madness that come with the roughness.

Now admittedly, there is no music I've heard that has as much songs dealing with Rough Sex as Dancehall music. Yes we can all name a few songs from every other genres... But none of them are as prominent as "Jack it Up", "Position", "Back Shot" "Tek Buddy" "Gal Splurt", "Well Done" just to name a few. And the women are requesting it. Songs like "Stab Out Mi Meat" "Real Badman Know fi Wuk Gyal" & "Rampin Shop" feature female artists requesting the brutality.

Since we're all adults we can speak plainly. Everyone knows that the most common single word request that every woman has while in the act is "Harder!!!" Not only do women want it harder... They want it for a long time... So we must aim to please. Every man knows what may work for him. Whether its the Guiness, Tiger Bone, Peanut Punch w/ Oats or the use of Stone or Chiney Brush... Its all in the interest of both satisfying the women and maintaining our own status.

Now when this topic was presented I did my own little research and asked a bunch of different women and they all agreed that of all the men they dealt with, the Jamaican man is the most aggressive & rough. This leads me to a question though... Are Jamaican Men rougher & more aggressive to satisfy the needs of our Jamaican women... Because let's face it... Unnu

Well... Whatever the case is... Mi nah dash weh my blenda!!! As long as woman love a challenge... We will be there to Rise To the Occasion!!! Pun Intended.

World AIDS Day 2010

Today is World AIDS Day.  A day to reflect on the impact of the disease, as well as our own health and the health of our loved ones.  Everyone is emphasizing the importance of knowing your status.  Make sure you get tested, if you don't know and encourage your sexual partner(s) to do so as well.  Especially our Black women who have the highest rate of infection.  Trust only yourself, and don't swear for anyone.  AIDS has no look, and does not discriminate.  The sexiest girl, or the best dressed man could be infected. Nearly 40% of Blacks have reported never being tested and almost 200,000 Americans are infected and don't even know about it (CDC).  Don't take anything for granted.

Alicia Keys as part of her Keep a Child Alive Charity, has spearheaded the 'Digital Death' campaign. Her and other celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams and others have vowed to refrain from using Social Networking sites today.  People can contribute to "bring them back to life" at either http://buylife.org/  or via text by texting BUYLIFE to 90999.  Proceeds will be used to provide AIDS medication, as well as nutrition, shelter, support and education for infected children in Africa and India.
