Jamaica land we love! Today Jamaica marks 49 years of Independence (not Monday which was Emancipation day as some thought). On August 6, 1962 Jamaica was granted it's independence from England. Many Jamaicans are celebrating with pride. Contrarily I have read comments where people have said that Jamaica has lost it's culture. I disagree. Most nations worldwide have become a melting pot. With technological advancements we are exposed to so much that 49 years ago would have been impossible. The sharing of thoughts, ideas, and cultural norms across societies is a day to day activity. Don't think of it as losing our culture but look at the impact Jamaica has had on the world. Jamaica has produced many talents which are household names like Bob Marley, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Usain Bolt amongst others. We came this close to having a recent Miss Universe in Yendi Phillips. Our accent, foods, music and other parts of our culture are notorious and second to none; sometimes to our detriment as people sometimes confuse other Caribbean islanders for Jamaicans. But face it Jamaica is the most known nation of the Caribbean despite having only approximately 2.8 Million people. Jamaica's influence is extraordinary. So instead of bashing Jamaica for what you think they may have lost, lift it up for all that they have accomplished in the past 49 years. Change is an inevitable part of life. Adapt and cherish it. Pray for Jamaica and the world at large. These are difficult times that we are all trying to adjust to. And on that note Happy Independence day Jamaica! Continue to do us proud. Jamaicans in Jamaica and abroad love you. WYRAS wishes you a happy 49th! God willing next year for the 50th mi deh deh pon mi teet lol.

The culture isn't lost we forgot to tell the story of our culture to a younger generation. I knew the history of my family as well as my country from my elders. I will continue that legacy by teaching my kids the importance of knowing their culture.
ReplyDeleteJamaica's 50th Independence will be spent with my family in JA. "Dis long time gal mi neva see you come mek mi hold u hand" RIP Miss Lou
It is impossible to lose our culture... JAMAICANS are the most culturally imitated in society. Our dialects, dances, music (riddims), cuisine and even our appreciation for GANJA are envied and reproduced, on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteFace it world: NUH WHEY NUH BETTA THAN YARD!
Happy Independence Day JAMAICA…49yrs and still we going strong.
